Berlin’s nu:legal Raises €1.3M to Merge AI and Legal Expertise for SMEs
nu:legal, a startup blending AI automation with human legal expertise, secures €1.3M in funding. The round, led by Caesar Ventures, will fuel the launch of its platform designed for small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggling with the cost and sluggishness of traditional law firms—yet wary of entrusting sensitive legal work to generic AI tools.
The company’s public beta, which went live on May 27, initially focuses on employment law and data privacy, two of the most pressing compliance challenges for German SMEs. Nu:legal aims to streamline routine tasks such as drafting contracts, managing terminations, and generating privacy policies, combining proprietary automation with the oversight of specialist lawyers.
Investor confidence in nu:legal is high, with backing from entrepreneurs, AI operators, and partners at top European law firms. The startup’s founder, Bork Morfaw—a former Freshfields lawyer—previously developed LegalGPT (formerly AnwaltGPT), a widely adopted legal AI tool with over 200,000 users across Europe.
The platform’s hybrid approach addresses a critical gap: SMEs need efficiency without sacrificing accuracy or trust in legal processes. As Berlin cements its reputation as a hub for innovation, nu:legal’s model could redefine how businesses access legal services.
