Tesla’s $350M Battery Challenge: Berlin Startups Invited to Innovate at Gigafactory

Tesla is inviting external innovators to its Gigafactory Berlin to strengthen its European supply chain. The Battery Cell Giga Challenge, a collaboration with JUNI, a Berlin-based startup incubator, targets battery tech startups. These startups can test their hardware and solutions directly on the factory floor to tackle bottlenecks and boost efficiency.

The initiative, announced by Giga Berlin plant manager André Thierig on X, focuses on expanding the factory’s 4680 cell production. Tesla’s promotional video emphasized a $350 million investment in battery cell manufacturing, urging startups to join. Thierig stated, “Great news for Brandenburg and Germany: Tesla is investing $350 million in battery cell production. Startups, take note — the Cell Giga Challenge has launched.”

Starting in August 2026, the program will engage startups in materials, production, automation, facilities, and AI for battery manufacturing. Tesla aims to make Giga Berlin a leading cell production hub in Europe, prioritizing speed, quality, cost, and safety improvements.

Applicants must demonstrate a proof of concept, manufacturing relevance, and scalability. The challenge spans five phases: online applications, screening, technical discussions, Pitch Day, and pilot talks. Successful teams may earn a paid pilot project with Tesla’s battery cell team.

This effort supports Tesla’s broader expansion at Giga Berlin, including increased vehicle production, 1,000 new jobs, and site expansion. The factory targets 18 GWh of annual battery production, fulfilling commitments made during recent labor negotiations.
